Our next event |Brews & Beats| is simply all of these things. Creative, curated, inspired, and coffee-related (because let's not forget, this is our first love). BUT, if coffee is not your thing, these cocktails will have you reeling in disbelief or dancing your happy dance - they're really good!Read More
Coffee Potluck, we missed the mark!
I did fail to post the summary of last month’s tasting at Kahve! (yet to come!). I know we told you it was going to be the first Sunday of the month and we missed it, but there’s a very good reason for displacing this month’s cupping.
Earlier this month I told a few of our subscribers the exciting news! One really exciting piece of news was that our city Vancouver got featured in Barista Magazine!
I always feel my writing isn’t good enough; too plain, too straight, not straight enough, you get the point– so writing this article was as if someone challenged me to write a short story using as many Vancouver cafe names as possible in one long breath. The article is a survey of what I’ve seen living here in the last year, but by no means is it exhaustive! Click Here to see how many of your friends show up in the field report. Also in this issue are fascinating reports from Brazil and a great story on cold brew on throwdowns! – which brings me to my next topic.
In the name of celebrating those in the article and this city, Coffee Potluck presents…
Capps for Cocks & Coochies - A phallic coffee art smackdown!
Vancouver’s first ‘adult’ coffee art competition where coffee competitors will go head-to-head pouring cappuccinos in the shape of genitalia. Judges hand selected from a group of industry leaders will be selecting winners based on aesthetics, likeness to the required shape, and taste. The competition will be a fast-pased bracket elimination format.
Hearts & flowers on your morning latte are pretty, but this is more than that. A good friend I knew in Dublin lost her battle with cervical cancer on her 29th birthday this year and I can’t tell you how stunned and touched so many people were by her loss. This has inspired me to continue the dialogue about the topic of screening.
Our goal is to raise $500-$1000 for cancers below the waist. The entirety of the funds will be donated to Prostate cancer foundation & BC Women’s Foundation (their End Cervical Cancer project). Coffee Potluck inspires strong community building in specialty coffee and beyond.
Can’t pour? Don’t worry.
We can still have loads of fun, watch as the competitors pour different capps. Four Winds beer will be flowing from the taps and we have loads of doorprizes to tell you about throughout the evening.
Admission by donation, Competitors can register for $15 at www.picatic.com/cappadoodledoo
Want to compete?
Two more spots left for competitors and prizes will be awarded for the top three fancy pours!
Hope some of this has resonated with you, It’s my intention inspire a strong community of taste seekers and foster real encouraging relationships. Let’s pour!
Coffee potluck was started to share coffee with a friends. Through conversations with coffee friends, we started to see that there was a real lack of cohesion in our city. We wanted coffee community to come together! So we started a casual monthly gathering focused around cupping coffees. I need to tell you more about that story later, but essentially it’s not just at a competition we see coffee culture together, but we want to have events that increase interest, visibility, and expertise in coffee. Push professionalism and knowledge within the industry and make coffee knowledge accessible to consumers too.
Sometimes Vancouver gets a bad wrap for our cool exterior, but we have been extraordinarily lucky to land a host each month who whole-heartedly supports our event and community.
We share in the benefit of open dialogue and our audience hopefully goes back to support our previous hosts.
We want to make friends in Vancouver - this is one unconventional way to do it.
We wanted to wait for you, yes all of you. Labour day came calling and your little heart went wandering to the island or the mountains; wherever your heart took you, even if it was in Vancouver, we hope you're rested and ready!Read More
If you’re into summer and you like the beach, we’ve asked a few local cold brew makers to offer up their product for us to dabble in. What you will need, bring a cup, and as always a little bit of (coffee) cold brew to share with the group and come hang out on Spanish Banks with us.Read More
The Aviary is a jaw-droping-ly gorgeous co-work space where designers & architects congregate. They create an approachable space for the discourse of design and how we encounter it.
Coffee Potlucks exist to create discourse about approaching and learning about specialty coffee in Vancouver and bring community together.
We came, we conquered, we tasted.
Who's Coffee Potluck for?
If you’ve never ‘tasted’ coffee formally before or you're curious about what the fuss is all about, honestly this is for you. It’s a great way to see what the difference is between coffee and …. well, coffee. Not convinced? - just ask me.
For industry, it’s a way for people to come together in a relaxed space for conversation and taste coffees that might pass us by in the city had we not met together. There is strength in numbers!
For roasters, this is your chance to showcase your newest crop and exciting projects!
This month we tried a new format.
Instead of cupping, Espro brought the patented double micro-filter french press (or cafetiere) to brew a super clean coffee that we tasted in our own personal cups. We mingled, drank coffee and shared ideas.
Here are the some of the coffees we brewed.
MAY 2016 COFFEE ROSTER - see also CafeYVR's post on the coffees

Apologies if we didn’t get a chance to get to your coffee this month, we had 4 brewers which limited the number of brews we could do.

June 5 is the next Coffee Potluck!
I can't believe two weeks has flown by without an update. Last coffee tasting was serendipitous, it started with a featured talk on the effect of water on Coffee from Nic Witzke and we challenged you to pick up the differences side by side.
We tasted a number of coffees and Andrew from East Van Roasters pulled out all the stops by showcasing 3, count-em', three single origin chocolates roasted from bean to bar at East Van Roasters.Read More
Have grace for yourself, but keep learning; to read, lead, and repeat.
Last year I featured women in the world who were killin' it at their craft. There was some much needed love for women in coffee. The best way to celebrate women and their social, economical and political achievements is to highlight an industry that touches all of those in a profound way from beginning to end. Specialty coffee has progressed the transparency and challenged many of the practices in the coffee industry in the last 20 years and continues to do so. So I'm delighted to have the privilege to highlight a few people in our community.Read More
I am so lucky to be meeting so many coffee people that are so very passionate about the industry. Joey shared his first encounter with the coffee and went on to describe that his work and experience at Elysian has shaped his relationships here in Vancouver.Read More
